Maurice Watkins CBE new president of BASL

The BASL Board are delighted to announce the appointment of Maurice Watkins CBE as the new President of BASL. 
Maurice has served as a BASL Director for many years and his extensive knowledge of the sector has proven invaluable to the Association.  As a senior partner of Brabners, Maurice has immeasurable first hand experience of the trials and tribulations of sport law and is considered a highly esteemed figure in the field.  
Maurice served as a Director of Manchester United for twenty-eight years before stepping down in 2012.  In addition, Maurice was a Director of the Rugby Football League Board for 12 years and also interim Chairman.  He is a director of Lancashire County Cricket Club (2012), British Swimming, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, the Rugby League European Federation and Barnsley Football Club.
He has advised the South African Premier League on the sale of its broadcasting and sponsorship rights and regularly advises the Association of European Professional Football Leagues on constitutional matters.  He is a frequent speaker on footballing issues including at international conferences in Brazil, China, Dubai, Egypt, Kuwait, the Ivory Coast, Japan, Oman, Nigeria, Qatar, Thailand and Trinidad & Tobago dealing with the formation and administration of professional leagues as well as presenting papers to the European Community Trade Marks Association and Court of Arbitration for Sport.   
Maurice chairs a number of charitable bodies including Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity, the Board of Governors of The Manchester Grammar School and the New Islington Free School Project.
Maurice was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by University College London in 2011 and the CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011 for services to Charity.  He was also recognised in the Manchester Legal Awards 2013 for an Outstanding Achievement Award and he received the North West Pride Award at North West Business Masters Awards 2013. He was voted 2014 International Sports and Entertainment Lawyer of the Year at the recent who’s Who Legal Annual Awards in New York.
